When AI Floods In, L&D Can Anchor the Flow

When AI Overwhelms the Workflow, L&D Becomes the Lifeline

Every time a new initiative launches without guidance, I feel the urgency—people don’t need another course; they need support for their performance in the flow of work, right when the task hits to ensure they are successful.

I’ve been working with companies that opened the AI floodgates using a familiar, past-based strategy: throw it against the wall and see what sticks. And while that might have worked for pilot programs and early tech rollouts, it’s not enough now. The stakes are higher, and the opportunity for Learning & Development teams is bigger than ever.

AI is changing how work gets done—and that means it’s changing how learning needs to show up. Our job isn’t just to teach people about AI. It’s to help them use it in the flow of work, at the moment they need it most.

Imagine this: a teammate types a simple prompt into a familiar platform and instantly gets a short module, a job aid, or a course excerpt tailored to their task. That’s not just convenience—it’s performance support. And it’s what L&D can deliver when we’re plugged into the right systems.

Action steps for L&D teams

  • Start with outreach. Connect with your IT and AI teams. Ask what resources already exist and what’s being built.
  • Curate and share. Package those resources in ways that are accessible, relevant, and embedded in the tools people already use.
  • Build bridges. L&D is uniquely positioned to connect user groups—operations, tech, leadership—and help them learn together.
  • Teach the limits. Help teams understand not just what AI can do, but where human judgment, communication, and critical thinking still lead.

Have you seen AI tools show up in the flow of work in ways that helped—or hindered—performance? What’s working in your organization, and what’s still missing? Please offer your insights to help us all build smarter, more human-centered learning systems.

If your team is navigating the AI rollout and wondering how to support learning in real time, I’d be glad to help you design systems that meet people where they are—and move them forward. Let’s schedule time to talk!

Bridging Distance, Building Excellence – As founder and CEO of Ryan Consulting, I transform how organizations thrive in remote and virtual environments.

For over 25 years, I’ve been fascinated by one question: How do we create extraordinary connection and performance when teams aren’t in the same room? This question has guided my career helping organizations harness the full potential of their distributed workforce.

My approach is refreshingly practical. I align what I call the 3P’s—Purpose, People, and Process—creating frameworks where remote teams don’t just function, they flourish. In today’s landscape of rapid change, this alignment isn’t just helpful—it’s your competitive edge.

Working together, we’ll craft solutions precisely calibrated to your organization’s unique challenges. Whether through customized workshops on performance support, process refinement, mobile solutions, or organizational effectiveness, I bring proven strategies that deliver measurable results.

My greatest satisfaction comes from watching leaders, teams, and individuals discover they can collaborate more effectively across distance than they ever thought possible. In a world of constant change, that’s not just good business—it’s transformational.

Ready to reimagine what your remote workforce can achieve? Let’s connect.
