Comfort Isn’t a Luxury — It’s a Leadership Strategy
I didn’t expect a heated ski‑lift seat to change how I lead, but the moment I felt that unexpected comfort, I realized this: when people feel safe and supported, they don’t just perform better—they become braver.
I had an unexpected moment of insight on a recent ski trip. I hopped onto a chairlift expecting the usual cold ride up the mountain—only to discover heated seats and a protective “bubble” that shielded us from the wind.
As I settled in, another rider laughed and said they wished these “tushie toasters” could follow them down the mountain. I chuckled too… and then the insight hit me.
At first, it felt like over‑the‑top comfort. But the truth is simple: when you’re warm and protected at the top, you perform better on the way down. If I’m comfortable, I ski more confidently, make better decisions, and stay safer.

And the same is true for our teams.
When people feel safe—emotionally, physically, and professionally—they show up differently. They take smart risks. They collaborate with intention. They innovate because curiosity feels less dangerous than silence.
Leaders don’t need to provide heated seats, but we do shape the conditions that help people perform at their best. Sometimes that’s clarity. Sometimes it’s psychological safety. Sometimes it’s simply removing friction so people can focus on the work that matters.
A few small actions you can try this week
- Ask one teammate what would make their work feel “warmer” or easier.
- Remove a small barrier that’s been slowing the team down.
- Reinforce a behavior that signals safety—like curiosity, transparency, or asking for help.
What’s your version of a “tushie toaster” at work—something small that makes a big difference in how people show up? I’d love to hear your experiences and insights; it would warm my heart!
And if you’re exploring how to build capability and confidence on your team—especially in a fast‑changing, AI‑shaped world—I’m here to help.

Bridging Distance, Building Excellence – As founder and CEO of Ryan Consulting, I transform how organizations thrive in remote and virtual environments.
For over 25 years, I’ve been fascinated by one question: How do we create extraordinary connection and performance when teams aren’t in the same room? This question has guided my career helping organizations harness the full potential of their distributed workforce.
My approach is refreshingly practical. I align what I call the 3P’s—Purpose, People, and Process—creating frameworks where remote teams don’t just function, they flourish. In today’s landscape of rapid change, this alignment isn’t just helpful—it’s your competitive edge.
Working together, we’ll craft solutions precisely calibrated to your organization’s unique challenges. Whether through customized workshops on performance support, process refinement, mobile solutions, or organizational effectiveness, I bring proven strategies that deliver measurable results.
My greatest satisfaction comes from watching leaders, teams, and individuals discover they can collaborate more effectively across distance than they ever thought possible. In a world of constant change, that’s not just good business—it’s transformational.
