Leading with Curiosity—and the BANII Mindset

What Happens When We Lead with Questions, Not Assumptions

Curiosity isn’t soft—it’s how leaders turn tension into trust. One question can change everything.

In a world that often feels loud with opinions and quick judgments, I’ve found that curiosity is one of the most underrated leadership tools we have. When I lead with curiosity, I’m not just gathering information—I’m inviting connection.

That’s where my BANII framework comes in. It’s a reminder to approach interactions with a mindset that’s Balanced, Agile, Navigable, Insightful, and Intentional. These aren’t just abstract values—they’re practical anchors that help me show up with clarity and care.

When I’m in a conversation that feels tense or uncertain, I ask myself:

  • Am I balancing my perspective with theirs?
  • Am I staying agile enough to adapt, not react?
  • Am I helping us navigate toward shared understanding?
  • Am I offering insight, not just information?
  • And most importantly, am I being intentional with my tone, timing, and purpose?

This approach helps me focus on what we have in common, rather than what sets us apart. It’s not about avoiding conflict—it’s about choosing curiosity over assumption, and design over default.

💡 Try This

Before your next meeting or conversation, pause and ask: “What would it look like to show up with BANII here?” Then choose one element to guide your tone or question. You might be surprised how quickly it shifts the energy.

We don’t need to agree on everything to move forward. But we do need to be curious enough to listen, and intentional enough to lead.

If you’re exploring ways to bring more balance, agility, and insight into your team’s communication or leadership development, I’d be glad to help. Whether it’s a workshop, coaching session, or a fresh look at your messaging strategy, let’s co-create something that moves people forward—with curiosity at the core.

As founder and CEO of Ryan Consulting, I transform how organizations thrive in remote and virtual environments.

For over 25 years, I’ve been fascinated by one question: How do we create extraordinary connection and performance when teams aren’t in the same room? This question has guided my career helping organizations harness the full potential of their distributed workforce.

My approach is refreshingly practical. I align what I call the 3P’s—Purpose, People, and Process—creating frameworks where remote teams don’t just function, they flourish. In today’s landscape of rapid change, this alignment isn’t just helpful—it’s your competitive edge.

Working together, we’ll craft solutions precisely calibrated to your organization’s unique challenges. Whether through customized workshops on performance support, process refinement, mobile solutions, or organizational effectiveness, I bring proven strategies that deliver measurable results.

My greatest satisfaction comes from watching leaders, teams, and individuals discover they can collaborate more effectively across distance than they ever thought possible. In a world of constant change, that’s not just good business—it’s transformational.
